In an effort to “take back lower Manhattan from mall chains,” owner Jorge Koszeg opened what he calls the “anti-Abercrombie”—a 6,000-square-foot store that carries only up-and-coming indie labels—smack dab in the heart of Soho. The former music exec modeled the bi-level space after a concert venue, complete with stage lighting and different departments set up to look like a stage, production office, loading zone, green room and pit area. Retro sound-equipment cases display men’s and women’s apparel that runs the gamut from $24 T-shirts to $545 leather jackets, plus a smattering of vintage shoes and accessories. Dudes can rock plaid Golfjunkie pants ($88) with Hoboken Tee cotton shirts ($48) emblazoned with the logos of iconic nightclubs like Studio 54 and Limelight. Chicks, meanwhile, will look rebel-chic in AY Not Dead mock-tuxedo sweaters ($124) and lip-printed tops ($145) paired with hip Lyla Black leather handbags ($238) and femme Lumete eyewear ($168). The rock & roll vibe isn’t just for show: Expect concert-ticket giveaways and monthly performances in store.
