She may be best known for her figure-flattering swimsuits, but designer Norma Kamali seems to be doing it all. In addition to her 43-year-old ready-to-wear label, she has a Walmart collection, a Huffington Post column (huffingtonpost.com/norma-kamali) and an olive oil line. Kamali’s latest venture is a health and beauty shop combined with a café, all tucked into the back of her main boutique. The spacious store’s stark white walls and clear chairs could come off as uninviting at first glance, but the vibe proves to be anything but. The staff encourages customers to play with the products and test samples, or enjoy complimentary green tea and popcorn drizzled in olive oil. Everything in the shop is 100 percent certified organic, plant-based and chosen by Kamali herself, whose passion for clean, chemical-free living sparked the creation of the shop. Intelligent Nutrients organic multiuse aroma sprays ($50)—which can be spritzed into water to give it flavor, on your body as perfume or around your home—are known by staffers to be one of Kamali’s favorite items. Hurraw tinted lip balms ($4) are chemical-free and edible (though we don’t recommend relying on them for nutritional value!), as are pink Himalayan Sea salts ($9–$60), which can be used for bathing and cooking. Munch on a burrito or veggie wrap ($10) provided by the healthy Lower East Side café Organic Avenue as you browse for Norma Kamali olive-oil-infused soaps ($15–$85), exfoliating soaps ($88) and calcium-rich body lotions ($15–$48). Get toned with Physique 57 DVDs ($25), Kamali’s workout of choice, or ditch the sweat fest and just grab a delicious raw-chocolate bar ($5). Stop by for Wellness Wednesdays, a weekly event featuring authors, health gurus and product samplings (free for day events, $28 for night fetes).
