Vegan style guide to NYC

Our favorite spots for scoring cruelty-free fashion, beauty and spa treatments.

The Green Spa & Wellness Center Housed in a sustainable building outfitted with soy roofing, recycled-denim insulation and nontoxic paints, this Bay Ridge spa is serious about its concern for the earth. Luckily for vegans, that interest includes animals, too: There are plenty of cruelty-free services to enjoy in the 12 cozy, feng shui--adherent treatment rooms, including the 75-minute Organic Custom Facial ($105), which uses products from Eminence, a plant-based line free of animal by-products. Alternatively, splurge for a decadent body treatment, such as the 90-minute Organic Balancing Body Wrap ($165), which relies on mineral-rich white clay and aai berries to replenish and hydrate your skin. Those looking to get the kinks worked out of their backs should opt for the Swedish-style Wellness Massage ($95 for 60 minutes), performed with vegan, organic oil. For a quick fix, the Green Spa even offers chemical-free vegan manicures ($18) and pedicures ($30). Before you leave, make sure to browse the plethora of animal-free goodies in the spa's extensive retail area. Our favorites: scented soy candles ($19--$28) and massage oils ($18) courtesy of in-house line Legend. Mention TONY to receive 15 percent off all products and services through Mar 31. 8804 Third Ave between 88th and 89th Sts, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (718-921-6100, greenspany.com)

Kaight If Kate McGregor's pair of eco-boutiques aren't already a lesson in just how chic green fashion can be, their array of vegan accessories certainly drives the point home. The stars of the well-edited collection are undoubtedly the fashion-forward shoes from Brazilian line Melissa. With styles ranging from wedged oxfords ($98) to studded booties ($105), and nearly all available in a mock-suede flocked-velvet option, we can hardly believe they're made of 100 percent recyclable plastic. (Don't even get us started on the killer dominatrix-like stilettos designed in collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier, $260.) While moseying about the airy, bamboo-floored space, keep an eye out for vegan offerings from Mat+Nat, including playful studded clutches ($185) and faux-snakeskin wallets ($55). Not all of Kaight's clothes are totally animal-free, but the sales associates are happy to point out the shop's many organic cotton pieces, like Prairie Underground's darted long-sleeved tunics ($150) and Earth's high-waisted, wide-legged jeans ($185). 83 Orchard St between Broome and Grand Sts (212-680-5630) * 328 Atlantic Ave between Bond and Hoyt Sts, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn (718-858-4737) * kaightnyc.com

Lush Beauty fiends of all persuasions love Lush for its abundance of innovative, all-natural products. But with 81 percent of its offerings certified vegan by the U.K. Vegan Society, the lively British chain is a can't-miss for the animal-friendly in particular. Look for the easy-to-spot green "V" sticker and you'll uncover goodies packed with the plant world's most potent ingredients. To wit, the best-selling Dream Cream body lotion ($25) is filled with skin-quenching olive oil, rosewater and oats, while clay-based solid cleanser Angels on Bare Skin (lb $13) features exfoliating ground almonds. Even locks can get the vegan treatment with solid shampoo bars ($10--$15) and potions like Veganese Hair Conditioner ($9--$29), which swaps sheep-derived lanolin for a softening agar-seaweed gel base. If the promise of a lustrous mane and glowing skin aren't enough to lure you in, Lush's jasmine-scented Sex Bomb ($7)—one of several fizzy bath bombs available—purportedly functions as an aphrodisiac. Locations throughout the city; visit lushusa.com

MooShoes As the no fur allowed sign outside its Lower East Side storefront implies, MooShoes—the world's largest retailer of vegan footwear—is serious about its mission. Inside, you'll find glass shelf after shelf of cruelty-free shoes to suit a wide range of tastes for both genders. The ethically stylish set will love Klub Nico satin peep-toe stilettos ($150) and Marais USA chunky-heeled oxfords ($110), which couldn't look or feel more like real leather. Casual looks include Cri de Coeur faux-leather boots with buckle straps ($140) and unisex Keep canvas boat shoes ($55). Dudes shouldn't feel left out: A decent array of men's styles include Novacas sturdy lace-up boots ($165) and old-school Saucony sneakers made from hemp and canvas ($59). Head to the back of the store for faux-leather belts ($45--$55) and bags ($45--$265), including Big Buddha's satisfyingly hefty chain-detail totes ($90). To make the greatest statement, grab one of Food Fight's canvas tote bags ($13) emblazoned with the phrase vegan means i'm a sex machine. 78 Orchard St between Broome and Grand Sts (212-254-6512, mooshoes.com)

NYA This charming boutique boasts a funky mix of cruelty-free clothing and accessories, thanks to co-owner Alex Guzman's line of mostly-vegan creations and a selection of animal-free accessories from local designers like jeweler Dyanne Belle. The real draw here is the assortment of splurgeworthy bags, including Zen Molinari faux-fur hobos ($380) and cotton canvas tribal-print totes ($360), and Guzman's chic mock-skin clutches with chain straps ($295). Other Guzman creations, like elastic belts with decorative metal closures ($129--$159) and oh-so-soft faux-shearling--lined gloves ($69), are also worth a trip, as is a great jewelry case featuring local designer Sophie Blake's chain-detail cuffs ($170). While the racks of one-of-a-kind dresses ($270--$425) tend toward the flashy (hello, metallic jumpsuit; $578), more wearable frocks, such as Aruk Jvaani stretch-cotton fitted sheath dresses ($378), are mixed in. Your look wouldn't truly be complete without an item or two from co-owner Aaron Bond's line of all-natural (and mostly vegan) makeup ($19--$50); we're partial to his nourishing shea-butter-based lip glosses ($19) and creamy pencil eyeliners ($19). Mention TONY for 20 percent off all purchases except precious jewelry through Mar 17. 13 Eighth Ave between Bleecker and Hudson Sts (646-340-0442, nyartificial.com)

skinnyskinny Eco-friendly, cruelty-free beauty is the name of the game at this year-old storefront, where founder Clara Williams and her team make bath and body products full of USDA-certified organic ingredients on premise. The reclaimed-wood--paneled space boasts the fruits of their labor, which, except for the beeswax lip balms ($6), are completely vegan. Clean up your act with naturally fragranced soaps ($8) that smell of basil-mint and rose-almond, are packed with moisturizing extra-virgin olive oil and wrapped in pretty recycled paper. You can also stock your medicine cabinet with equally pampering body scrubs ($30), bath salts ($34) and body oils ($22) in an array of mouth-watering scents like clementine-and-clove and jasmine green tea. Don't forget to pick up something for Fido: skinnyskinny takes its animal-friendly mission to the next level by offering vegan Organic Fetching Dog shampoo bars ($8) for your furry friends. Mention TONY or use the code "TONYVEGAN" when shopping online for 30 percent off all purchases through Mar 6. 129 Roebling St between North 4th and 5th Sts, suite B; Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-366-2201, skinnyskinny.com)

Sustainable NYC This cheery general store is crammed with a laundry list of earth-friendly goods, and a closer look reveals that many of its wares are also vegan. Ask a sales associate to point you toward the animal-free bath-and-body-products section in particular, which yields giftworthy goods like Herbolution's Dead Sea--salt bath soak ($15) and handmade, shea-butter-packed Connecticut Natural Soapworks bars ($8) in delicate scents like honeysuckle-rose. Bulk up your cosmetic case with Sustainable's stash of all-natural Suncoat mineral eye shadows ($16) and nontoxic nail polish from Priti ($13). There's also an abundance of everyday necessities, running the gamut from Kiss My Face aloe-vera toothpaste ($7) and Aubrey Organics Men's Stock shaving cream ($8) to Good Clean Love seaweed-based personal lubricants ($11). Mention TONY for 10 percent off purchases through Feb 28. 139 Ave A between 8th and 9th Sts (212-254-5400, sustainable-nyc.com)

Vaute Couture If you want further proof that vegan fashion need not be synonymous with hippie-dippy hemp frocks, look no further than former model and longtime vegan Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart's line of impeccably made ethical winter coats for men and women. Though Hilgart launched Vaute Couture in 2009, it wasn't until this month that shoppers could visit her intimate Chelsea studio by appointment (Tue noon--5pm, Thu 2--7pm) and browse the racks of her fashion-forward designs. The looks, including swingy dress coats ($281), cape-inspired short-sleeve styles ($418) and classic pea coats ($398), are made of super-soft, high-performance Polartec fabric and lined in 100 percent recyclable satin ripstop. Also look for cheeky organic cotton statement tees, like those announcing no animals were harmed in the making of this girl ($26), and chunky hand-knit headbands ($48) made of organic soy yarn, for sporting under and outside your jacket, respectively. Mention TONY to receive 30 percent off all regularly priced coats and 10 percent off all knit accessories through Mar 3. Or enter the code "TONY1" for 30 percent off regularly priced coats and "TONY2" for 10 percent off all knit accessories when shopping online through Mar 3. 548 W 28th St between Tenth and Eleventh Aves, suite 336 (773-295-1432, vautecouture.com)
