Dancing at Lughnasa

Brian Friel’s elegiac memory play beautifully captures the tensions between desire and duty, past and present, and family and individuality in rural 1936 Ireland. Charlotte Moore’s revival is respectfully modest: The cast is appealing, the staging simple, the dancing restrained and charming. These qualities favor the play's nostalgic elements over its more bitter potential.—Garrett Eisler
