On a Clear Day You Can See Forever

Director Michael Mayer and book rewriter Peter Parnell take Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner's flawed 1965 musical fantasy about therapy and ESP, and make it even more of a mess. This clunky revisal switches time periods, does a gender flip and inserts a gay subplot. Harry Connick Jr. and newcomer Jessie Mueller sing the swoony Lane tunes beautifully, but the book is a bore.—David Cote
