Nestled between director’s theater and a safely traditional approach, Gordon Edelstein’s revival is the best of both worlds. His framing device—we are in a hotel room with Tom Wingfield (Patch Darragh) after he has left his overbearing mother (Judith Ivey) and sickly sister (Keira Keeley)—adds freshness to the Tennessee Williams classic and emphasizes its autobiographical origin. The acting is strong and nuanced, and the new scenic context will make you see The Glass Menagerie with new eyes. Turns out this sepia-toned classic isn’t as fragile as Laura’s delicate toy figurines.—David Cote
