Tony Kushner’s multitudinous, elegiac new work is an expression of profound disquiet: a domestic drama (centering on the suicidal patriarch of an old-left Brooklyn clan) animated by a nuanced examination of the ways that materialism inflects our daily lives. This is a vast, rich act of public-intellectual engagement, and Michael Greif’s attentive direction elicits complex and forceful performances from a largely first-rate cast. Kushner’s carefully organized labor of love is a spur to the active mind.—Adam Feldman
