The Shaughraun

In Irish Rep’s delightful production, directed by Charlotte Moore, Dion Boucicoult’s jaunty 1874 work becomes even sweeter and more toylike. As the titular vagabond, Patrick Fitzgerald always seems in the middle of some jig; as he and his friends foil the dastardly Corry Kinchela (the superb Sean Gormley), they jolly us back to an era when we booed villains and huzzahed heroes, leaving us cheering and deeply cheered.—Helen Shaw
