The Whipping Man

In Matthew Lopez’s exploration of race, faith and brotherhood, a Jewish Confederate officer (Jay Wilkison) shares a Passover seder with two of his former slaves (André Braugher and André Holland). Doug Hughes's production is handsome, and the actors perform with commitment, but the play can’t escape the constraints of its determined ironies.—Adam Feldman
