Master the art of fire dancing at this series, in which you learn how to safely twirl, spin and move while handling metal-and-wick fans in hypnotizing dances, or “spin jams.” In the final class, you get to light your fans on fire and feel like the Khaleesi.

This space, this teacher, and this series are incredible. It is one of the reasons that I love living in New York - and in Brooklyn in particular. The Floasis is one (if not the only) space in NY entirely dedicated to fire dancing. One of the founders, Tara, works with the fire department to create fire safety standards for performers. Her fire safety courses are a must! The fan series progress from easy movements to progressively more advanced movements and spins. There are also plenty of other courses available here, like poi, staff, and fire eating. She sends you video recaps of the classes for you to practice over the week. The Floasis also hosts super affordable Spin Jams on Wednesdays where you can hang out with fire dancers of all calibers, share and practice your moves, and learn new ones - yes, with fire (and experienced folks who will watch you for safety). They start after a donation based yoga class. I love everything about this community space, that also holds performances, it's truly a work of art and love.
