The prince of postclassical song comes to SubCulture to celebrate the release of his excellent new album, OK It's Not OK. The song cycle is organized around themes of depression and alienation (often in relation to the contemporary gay experience), while the arrangements are Dargel’s most vivid yet. The stoic directness of his elegantly bummed-out vocals contrasts with the complex drum-machine grooves, while the acoustic-violin parts collide deliciously with the electric guitar, bass and synths. Naturally, the players Dargel has recruited for this repertoire (including violinist Cornelius Dufallo) can bring out both aspects of the “art-song” label.
