It’s no secret that the walkways and bike paths on Manhattan’s East Side pale in comparison with the island’s well-manicured Hudson waterfront. Local nonprofit CIVITAS sought to change that with a 2011 contest, now the subject of an exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York, to reenvision a particularly grim stretch of the East River Esplanade. Hear about the process and the best entries from members of the jury, including lawyer Albert K. Butzel, who was at the forefront of the development of Hudson River Park, and architect Signe Nielsen.
