What do you do? I recently switched from being a freelance writer (I had a sustainability column in The Washington Post and helped edit the new issue of Fashion Rocks) to designing full-time for the clothing line Bodkin (bodkinbrooklyn.com), which I work on with my officemate Samantha. Everything is made with organic, recycled or otherwise sustainability-driven fabric, and we are trying to really push the envelope with materials, from recycled tire-rubber buttons to seaweed-cotton–blend fabric. I also play keyboard in a psych-dance band. We don’t have a MySpace page because we can’t think of a name—help! If you e-mail a suggestion to bodkinbrooklyn@gmail.com and we use it, I’ll send you free clothes.

How would you classify your style? Understated, slightly grungy and high of hemline.

What are some of your favorite places to hang out in NYC? Locanda Vini e Olii in Clinton Hill is my favorite restaurant in the city, for its atmosphere and simple, amazing Tuscan food using seasonal and local ingredients. Silent H, Frankies 457, Bozu and Caracas are my other mainstays. When I go out, it’s usually to see a specific band or DJ, but Spuyten Duyvil is always fun for a drink, especially when the back garden is open. I love the Natural History Museum and the Noguchi Museum, but on days off I tend to hang around Brooklyn.

Why did you choose this location for the photo? The Green Dome in McCarren Park is near our studio and it really feels like another world. You can bring refuse here to compost, and it goes toward maintaining the park. And it’s right across from Urban Rustic, a great organic café where we often have lunch.

What are you excited to do this fall? I haven’t had much time to think about what’s happening in fall ’08, because all I’ve been thinking about is working on our spring ’09 collection for Bodkin. But I’m planning on taking a road trip to Vermont as soon as possible.
