Silent films are getting the glorious big-screen treatment they deserve at MoMA’s fourth annual Silent Movie Week, a seven-film showcase of newly restored classics from some of cinema’s most legendary directors. Running July 29 through August 4, the series includes landmark works by D. W. Griffith, Buster Keaton, Raoul Walsh, Ernst Lubitsch, Charlie Chaplin, John Ford and F. W. Murnau. Six of the seven films will feature live musical accompaniment, including a 10-piece orchestra performing a newly reconstructed score for Griffith’s Way Down East. Other highlights include Keaton’s The Navigator, Lubitsch’s The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg and Murnau’s Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. Several screenings mark the first presentations of MoMA restorations, making this a particularly good week to understand what Norma Desmond meant when she said, "We had faces then" in Sunset Boulevard.
