The star attraction of any Portal show is undoubtedly the oddball costumes: The band’s frontman, known only as the Curator, has appeared dressed as a faceless pope, a shrouded squid creature and even a grandfather clock. But what’s so impressive about these Brisbane death-metalists is the way their buzzy, disorienting sonics mirror their outlandish visuals. Here, following an appearance at Baltimore's fabled Maryland Deathfest, Portal plays a rare local show, with support from Impetuous Ritual—a fellow Brisbane band fronted by Portal drummer Ignis Fatuus—and eerie, deliriously proggy locals Negative Plane.
