A summer without a beach day is like a bar without Stella Artois: It’s just not right. Thankfully, much like our city’s picturesque parks, New York beaches are open to offer relief during these trying times. But before you suit up and summon the clambake crew, make sure to brush up on the rules. Our humble advice? Nix the mollusks and your volleyball — large gatherings and group contact sports are a no-no — and bring an umbrella to avoid an unwanted yet noble face mask tan.

1. Coney Island Beach

It’s no wonder why legendary rockers like Lou Reed, Debbie Harry and Patti Smith frequented this beloved, carnivalesque Brooklyn beach. It has a rich history, but is widely-known for its whimsical theme park as well as major events like the Mermaid Parade and Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. To sit in the sand and admire not only the view of the ocean but Deno’s Wonder Wheel from behind is just so ceremoniously New York, it’s worth breaking your no-cliché rule.

2. Rockaway Beach

Cue the Ramones! This community-focused surfer town (the waves are gnarly and existent) is worth the hype for it’s spacious six-mile beach and tasty grub, which you can get to go! It’s home to haunts like Rippers, a trendy burger shack, and Last Dragon Pizza, with its otherworldly cauliflower 'za. Then you’ve got gems like Tacoway Beach offering, well, you get the gist.

3. Brighton Beach

Just a hop, skip and a jump away from Coney Island, this residential Brooklyn beach is certainly more low-key but equally as easy to find (the surf is just a few footsteps away from the subway). It’s also known as Little Odessa, as it's populated by residents from Russia and Ukraine. Grab authentic Eastern European delicacies at Skovorodka or a piece of baklava from Güllüoglu when you feel peckish.

4. Orchard Beach

The Bronx’s answer to a sandy shore is known for two key features: it’s unique crescent shape and breathtaking views of City Island. There aren’t many restaurants and bars in the area, unlike some of the other party-loving attractions on this list. These days, that’s a win — the less rowdy beachgoers, the merrier! Nevertheless, it’s still a popular summer destination for sunbathers.

5. Manhattan Beach

A direct neighbor to Brighton Beach, this tranquil spot is a must for a little rest and relaxation. Loll in the sand, go for a ride on your boogie board and bring your own dogs and burgers to fry at one of the designated barbecue areas. End the day with a sunset stroll along Sheepshead Bay Piers for the perfect, low-cost staycation.

6. The People’s Beach

Coined for its close proximity to public transit, this beach is also known as Jacob Riis Park, which is where the good folks at Riis Park Beach Bazaar (also the founders of the socially distanced, 30,000-square-foot Bathhouse Beer Garden) get their name. You may be rightfully timid to visit a beach with a name that suggests a crowd, so here’s a pro tip: Plan your getaway on a weekday when the idyllic shore is less packed.

Stop for Stella: Boardwalk Bagels (193 Beach 108th St), Pickles & Pies Food Mkt (402 Beach 116 St), Belle Harbour Foods Inc (413 Beach 129th St)
