Adelphi St at Carlton Ave #3

Four-bedroom in Fort Greene, Brooklyn; $3,995/month ($998.75 per person)

We’re kicking off this week’s installment with a massive apartment in Fort Greene, with acres of exposed brick and shiny, shiny wooden floors. The bedrooms themselves look to be on the “Oh yes, I forgot, I live in New York, where tenants are expected to be the size of gerbils and have no possessions” scale of size, and there’s only the one bathroom for all those people, but despite all that, it’s a very attractive pad.

    Madison St

Two-bedroom in Two Bridges, $2,400/month ($1,200 per person)

Admittedly, this place goes over our $1,000-per-person limit, but it has two bedrooms with walk-in closets, a nice kitchen, sits two blocks from the F train and is walking distance from the Lower East Side. The apartment itself is located halfway between the East River and Chinatown, so there’s hours of entertainment to be had.

    Halsey St at Lewis Ave

    Two-bedroom in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn; $2,000/month ($1,000 per person)

On the one hand, this is clearly a walk-up, but on the other hand, you do get a lovely view of treetops out of virtually every window. You also get a separate kitchen, a full bathroom, lots of closets and a few other things that pretty much everyone else in America takes for granted.

    First Ave at 102nd St

Four-bedroom in East Harlem, $3,995/month ($998.75 per person)

This apartment sits on East 101st Street, one block from the East River, and comes with on-site laundry and all utilities included. What’s disconcerting, however, is the fact the listing sometimes refers to it as a four-bed, and sometimes as a three-bed—whether this is a mistake, or because one of the bedrooms is actually a closet, remains to be seen.

    Sutton St #3LL

Three-bedroom in Greenpoint, Brooklyn; $2,600/month ($867 per person)

You’re going to be a bit of a trek from the nearest subway if you rent this apartment, but you will get a spacious place with a nicely laid-out kitchen and good-size bedrooms. Potential downside: One of the bedrooms appears to have a tiled floor, so you’ll want to invest in some warm slippers before winter hits.
