  1. BLT Bar & Grill

Right by the World Trade Center site in bustling downtown New York, BLT Bar & Grill is a sleek version of the traditional American tavern, decorated with suspended lanterns and Edison bulbs, antique mirrors, and plenty of dark wood. It serves beer, cocktails and wine, as well as classic bar food, updated by Executive Chef David Craine—formerly of such New York favorites as Gramercy Tavern and Gotham Bar and Grill. The venue is focused on a large and inviting bar, but there are plenty of tables at which to enjoy a more leisurely meal, perhaps while taking in the big game on one of BLT’s large TV screens.

  2. The LCL: Bar & Kitchen NYC

On the ground floor of The Westin Grand Central, The LCL is handsome in dark tones, with lots of walnut wood and an electronic “forest wall” that changes as the day progresses. This natural look emphasizes the restaurant’s insistence on seasonality and local suppliers in its food and drink, with organic and biodynamic wines, craft beers, coffee from the Stumptown roasters and organic cold-pressed juices from Organic Avenue. Located just steps from Grand Central Terminal, The LCL is the perfect destination whether you want a grab-and-go breakfast, the signature LCL flame-grilled Pat LaFrieda burger, or just an attentively mixed late-night cocktail.

  3. The Lambs Club Restaurant and Bar

Designed by “American Renaissance” architect Stanford White and opened in 1905, the landmark Chatwal hotel was home to Lambs, the first professional actors’ club in the United States (Cecil B. DeMille and John Wayne were both members). Reopened after a seriously deluxe renovation by Thierry Despont, such a location requires a sophisticated restaurant—and The Lambs Club is just that. Under celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian, the dining room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a gorgeous room of black and passionate dark reds, while the sumptuous bar on the floor above serves excellent cocktails and afternoon tea. It’s a perfect setting for live jazz (Tuesday and Wednesday night, Sunday brunch).

  4. Shula’s Steak House

Owned by NFL coaches Don Shula and his son Dave (there’s memorabilia from all-time-great Don’s undefeated season with the Miami Dolphins on the walls), this steakhouse is in the heart of Times Square—and it’s one of the finest in the United States, having recently become an OpenTable® Diners’ Choice restaurant for the New York City and Tri-State area. Extraordinary care is taken over the selection and cut of the beef they use—always premium Black Angus and always The SHULA CUT®, an exclusive cut only available at Shula’s Steak Houses.

  5. Olives

After an ambitious redesign in 2012, Olives continues to serve chef Todd English’s modern take on Mediterranean cooking. His dishes are built with fresh, seasonal produce from the nearby Greenmarket on the edge of Union Square Park. You might fancy a baby artichoke salad served with a crispy risotto cake, or the Long Island duckling with sweet potato purée and red cabbage agrodolce. Sumptuous pastas, flatbreads from the wood-fired oven, and zingingly fresh seafood are also served, along with artisanal cocktails and award-winning wines.

  6. SB&G

Less than an hour outside New York City, Tarrytown—a village on the Hudson River—was once home to Mark Twain. These days, it’s worth coming here to enjoy the fine flavors at this modern American grill. Head out onto the patio and eat outside in good weather, or in winter relax in the wood-panelled interior by the warming fire. The food offers a bit of everything you might fancy, from penne pasta with apple-smoked chicken and New York strip steak to pecan-crusted haddock and a fine burger, all of which can be paired with something delicious from the wine cellar.

  7. Whiskey Blue

Updating New York’s reputation for legendary drinking dens, Whiskey Blue has a masculine feel, with snakeskin club chairs, buttoned leather banquettes and plenty of shining metalwork. On the ground floor of W New York, the low-lit interior gets a lift from Jim Marshall’s brilliant rock ’n’ roll photos on the walls, but it’s the drink selection that really catches the eye: beer and wine, spirits and liqueurs, and cocktails that range from a signature Midnight Manhattan to seasonal concoctions using market-fresh ingredients.

  8. Lilium

Lilium is a sensational-looking bar. Designed by Gulla Jonsdottir of G+Design, the 1,600 sq. ft. subterranean space—under W Union Square—recalls a cave of wild lilies, with extravagantly twisted metalwork on the ceiling, above sculpted black lilies and erotically curving black booth seating. Behind the bar, a video screen plays work by up-and-coming artists, while the carefully selected DJs keep the mood with a mix of electronica and more upbeat tunes. Chef Todd English provides the bar menu (the likes of lamb merguez sliders) and there are sensational cocktails. Lilium is closed on Mondays, but is open until 4am the rest of the week.

W New York Union Square, 201 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10003, 1-212 358 1560.

  9. Living Room Bar & Terrace

In the middle of the financial district, the Living Room Bar & Terrace is a 10-second elevator ride up, on W New York Downtown’s fifth floor. Choose between lounging on the outdoor terrace or inside behind the floor-to-ceiling windows as you enjoy the views of 1 World Trade Center and the New York skyline. Even without the views, this is a spectacular venue thanks to thousands of LEDs, which make a billowing curtain in the center of the main room. The cocktails, overseen by celebrity mixologist Charlotte Voisey, are excellent, and the DJs know how to enhance the post-work vibe.
