Funan is going all in for Singapore Art Week 2024, with a month-long dragon-themed art exhibition that ties in nicely with the Year of the Dragon. It’s not at all like your traditional art exhibition though, since Creative Intersections: Traces of Dragon is scattered throughout Funan, featuring 16 local artists and brand collaborations.

From an LED dragon dance display to abstract silhouettes against a kinetic wall, it makes for a photo-worthy exhibition. But vibrant colours and eye-catching art aside, it’s also a captivating showcase of how different spaces and artists have their own individual interpretation of the dragon. From now to February 25, find these six photo-worthy spots at Funan – they’re equal parts thought-provoking and photogenic.

Creative Intersections: Traces of Dragons

1. Colourful dragon eggs

With dragon eggs symbolising the circle of life, Funan Passion Eggs are a nod to the Year of the Dragon – these not only celebrate new beginnings, but are also an emblem for protection. You’ll see that each of these six eggs is unique. “Fit” by Arrvin Raj, is a metaphor for personal growth, while “Chic” by artist Steven Low plays with the depth of textures and materials. To find them, here's a hint: the eggs are hidden in three locations around Funan, and the artists have based each of their creations on Funan's passions: Chic, Craft, Fit, Play, Taste and Tech.

2. Dragon display and dragon-themed design activity at Ray-Ban

It’s for Chinese New Year only that the Ray-Ban store (#01-K01) has a special space set aside – with an interactive activity area and a striking cardboard Wooden Dragon display. If you purchase any of Ray-Ban’s eyewear from now to February 25, you can design your own Ray-Ban iconic Aviator lens-inspired pieces* to contribute to the Wooden Dragon art installation.

3. A glowing green AI dragon by Razer™️

Head over to leading lifestyle brand for gamers Razer™ď¸Ź (#01-10) where a glowing green dragon awaits. This particular exhibit is captivating in its movements – President Young Talent of 2016 Ong Kian Peng unveils an audiovisual installation using generative AI. An interplay of luminous hues and intricate layers of acrylic showcases a Chinese dragon masterpiece.

4. Dragon motifs animated on a kinetic wall

Animated on the Funan Kinetic Wall, artist Koh Kai Ting ponders over the existence of dragons across different cultures. This comes to life through a series of animations, using patterns that are inspired by natural phenomena – take Turing patterns and Conway’s Game of Life. Not only is it a photo-worthy display of animated dragon motifs, but also makes for an intriguing piece.

Check out the minute long animation at the Funan Kinetic Wall on Level 1 (facing the junction of Coleman Street and North Bridge Road) every 15 minutes from 10am to 10pm daily. This animated kinetic wall is best seen at night and when you’re across Funan. You’ll also want to grab your phone to scan the QR code – there’s a swanky dragon AR filter to try out, as created by artist Kai Ting.

5. A colourful “Gachapon” inspired underground mural

While a dragon might not make an appearance at The Gachapartment Complex, this exhibit is entirely worth taking a closer look. It comes in the form of a vibrant mural, stretching the span of Funan’s Underground Pedestrian Linkway in Basement 2. Here, you’ll see a “hidden utopia” where you’ll find toys living their best lives. As developed by Nikkei and Temasek Polytechnic students, this installation features three communal areas: an ice cream truck, swimming complex, and laundromat. At each space, make sure to scan your phone for a QR code where a fun AR filter will pop up with colourful superimposed images. Swing by from January 19 to March 3 – it’s also a part of Light to Night Festival 2024.

6. An animated light dragon dance installation

A lion dance is customary every Chinese New Year, but this year, Funan also features an animated light art installation “Dance of the Dragon”. You won’t miss it: this mythical dragon is right at the front at the atrium, blending tradition and photo-worthy elements. There’s a 10-minute light show every half an hour, in which the dragon lights up and dances to the music. This is a collaboration between CapitaLand and leading creative studio and art collective, Tell Your Children. Come down and see it for yourself at Funan Level 1 Atrium from January 18 to February 4, from 10am to 10pm. There’s even an interactive Instagram filter you can use, to stand a chance to win a $50 eCapitaVoucher.
