Batik is an ancient art that has captured the interest of many over the years. The textile technique is believed to have first originated from Java, only belonging to royal families and wealthy people. It is then brought to countries like Indonesia, Middle East, Thailand, Africa, Malaysia, India, China and Singapore. In Singapore, the technique of using wax to resist dye has been adapted by local artists for painting during the pioneer era.
The practice is still alive in Singapore, thanks to the relentless dedication of the few artists that specialise in the practice and teaching it. Often being relegated as craftsmen of a bygone era, these artists kept to their passion and moved forward bringing progress to the medium.
Learn more about the ancient art form at Lakar Lilin, an exhibition showcasing Singapore's living batik masters: namely Sarkasi Said, Sujak Rahman, Sadali Musbah, Tumadi Patri and Kamal Dollah. The pioneers, who have devoted years to the art and craft of batik-painting, each practised independently and developed their own distinct style over years of artistic practice. This is a rare chance to catch all of their works together, as it's the first time they are gathered to exhibit together.
The art exhibition is organised by non-profit organisation Kamal Arts and Wisma Geylang Serai Precinct Department. It'll be held at Kamal Arts Gallery located at the National Arts Council (NAC) Art space at Wisma Geylang Serai.
The exhibition will be going on throughout the month of Ramadhan and the public can join activities at the gallery or view the online streaming.
