See the world through the eyes of Filipino artist Manuel Ocampo at STPI Gallery from May 18 to June 22. Known for his bold and subversive approach to art, the painter combines baroque religious symbols and iconography with secular political influences, as well as elements from historical rhetorics, cartoons, and the punk subculture.
Explore his distinctive art style at STPI Gallery, where visitors can observe the print and paper experimentations up close. In the process of creating such intriguing and provocative masterpieces, Manuel Ocampo uses various forms of old imagery with new techniques and modes of production. His chaotic and violent compositions showcase the interweaving of history, identity, and culture, igniting the curiosity of visitors and inviting them to look beyond the imageries. Highlights of the exhibition include Virtue Signalling on the Bully Pulpit, a collagraphy, and screenprint on paper, and If All You Are Is A Nail Then Everything Looks Like A Hammer Version 1, a hybrid of screenprint, relief cast paper, and handpainted and screenprinted flags on canvas.
With the exhibition on display, perhaps it is timely to ask – how do we encounter symbols and icons in an age of compulsive production, consumption and circulation?
