The Backdrop

If you love an immersive ambience, showy mixology and a sprinkle of theatre, The Backdrop is where to be.

This speakeasy-style bar checks all the boxes of what a 'secret bar' should have. A passcode will be sent along with the confirmation of your reservation – this is your key to enter. Hidden behind wooden doors in Voco Hotel's shopping arcade, the bar leads you first through the 'backstage' of a cabaret, before you enter its gorgeous dining room dripping with old-world charm, from its sultry red velvet hues to gold-gilded details. 

The cocktail menu is separated into different 'acts' as in a play, all the work of mastermind and founder Dario Knox. You'll find all the Backdrop classics at a glance under the Overture section, before scanning through categories like gastronomy-inspired cocktails, fat-coated concoctions, tipples made using the traditional English milk punching technique, smoked cocktails, agave-based drinks and more.

Our favourite comes from the Timeless Gems section. The Imperial Negroni is a take on the Lucien Gaudin, which is itself a gin-forward and drier version of the original negroni. Here, Iichiko Saiten Shochu meets dry vermouth, Campari and dry Curaçao in a punchy and bitter, yet classy pour. For something richer, go for the Negroni "Supreme" instead. Coconut oil-coated gin is the highlight here, alongside hazelnut and coffee beans that layer on warmth and depth.

Cards with talking points and conversation starters are handed out to each table along with your drinks – great for breaking the ice on a first date or keeping the energy up on a giggly girls' night out. Come for the experience, stay for the drinks, then come back to do it all over again.
