A whole new Zouk

Zouk gets acquired by Genting Hong Kong – what will its future look like?

Hands up if you get bitten by the nostalgia bug whenever you pass by Jiak Kim Street, listen to ‘80s songs that remind you of Mambo Jambo, or think back to the days when Zouk took your clubbing virginity. Yeah, us too. After all, it’s been a mainstay in the scene for over 24 years now.

But all that may change soon. News about the iconic nightclub’s acquisition by Genting Hong Kong (GHK) broke today, with plans for the brand to be signed, sealed and delivered to the leisure, entertainment and hospitality enterprise by the end of the year.

What does that mean? Well, GHK will be taking over major trademarks like Zouk’s new Clarke Quay digs (set to open in the later part of 2016) and its annual beach bash, ZoukOut. But most of the current team remains, including long-time general manager Benny Heng, newly appointed to managing director of the Singapore club to retain the brand’s identity and authenticity. From the GHK side, Andrew Li will oversee strategies for expansion. But our neighbours in KL will still have Zouk founder Lincoln Cheng keep his position as non-executive chairman.

So, no worries. Your go-to party space – and a constant name on lists of the world’s best clubs – will probably continue to throw hardcore raves featuring top-notch DJs just like before. Just keep your eye out for more of Zouk – perhaps it’ll pop up in other Asian cities and even Las Vegas.

Watch this space for more updates.
