How to get perks at fancy restaurants

We ask ilLido’s restaurant manager, Kit Chan, about the things to request for that’ll boost your experience at a fancy restaurant.

A prank

Ask the restaurant beforehand if you have a special idea in mind. 'We had a guest who booked a private room for a birthday. When he arrived, we told him that there was no reservation made in his name – he got pretty upset. So we walked him to the bar to wait. But his friends were there to surprise him – they had called us ahead to plan the prank with our team,' recalls Chan.

A birthday dessert

Fine dining restaurants like ilLido can usually arrange for birthday cakes to end your meal on a high (hint: it’s always your birthday). 'This is the safest and most common request,' says Chan. 'We also frequently receive requests for special messages to be drawn on the desserts, or a surprise to be hidden in one the dishes.'

A personalised menu

You can print any message you want on the menu. Chan says, 'We’ve had guests who’ve asked us to include messages in a special menu to be served to their special someone. Back when we were at ilLido Sentosa Golf Club, we once printed an additional page in our booklet, after the dessert section with the note: “Will you marry me?”'

Try out these requests at any of the restaurants around town.
