Narelle Kheng is no stranger to the public eye. Riding high on the wave of The Sam Willow’s fame, the 22-year-old bassist of the indie pop quartet is stepping out of her band members’ shadows to trade feel-good pop songs for melancholy and grit. In her debut single ‘Some They Lie’, the vocalist delves into the dark side of a relationship, featuring heartbreak and unfaithfulness: ‘Don’t f*** with my head / But I keep taking my chances’ and ‘Please don’t take me for granted / Oh darling don’t lie’. Lending a hand to the synth-soaked ballad is Singaporean producer Tat Tong, whose work can be found in chart-topping pop hits like Troye Sivan’s ‘Happy Little Pill’ and C-pop star, Vanness Wu’s ‘Invincible’.

The music video, directed by fellow singer-songwriter Joel Tan (aka Gentle Bones) – who also helped pen the song – is dark, moody and complete with what the millennials would call ‘Tumblr #aesthetics’. In the video, a lace-clad Kheng sits gloomily in the middle of a living room as she gets caught in the crossfire between a couple whose argument intensifies by the second – there's yelling, chokeholds and all.

While no news has surfaced about an EP or album launch so far, you can check her upcoming performance with The Sam Willows at The Coliseum Hard Rock Hotel on July 22 as part of the band’s ‘Take Heart Tour’.

‘Some They Lie’ is now available on iTunes and Spotify.
