Halleloo! In case you've been living under a rock, we're excited to say that The RuPaul’s Drag Race diva – better known as Shangela – is set to slay at the Shine Auditorium with her new show Shangela is Shook. But before you get your wigs snatched by her stage antics filled with upbeat music, side-splitting comedy and some risqué cabaret, the diva spills the tea on her debut Singapore show, her time on Ru Paul's Drag Race and what we can expect next.
Hi Shangela! Are you excited to be in Singapore?
This will be my first performance in Singapore. I am thrilled to bring a super fun show and finally have a chance to meet the fabulous Drag Race fans here in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
What are you most excited about?
Everything! I’ve heard so many amazing things about this city and now I will experience it all for myself. The food, the culture, the people and especially some of the gorgeous sites featured in one of my favorite movies this year Crazy Rich Asians.
Talk us through your show – Shangela is Shook. Will we be shook?
The Shook show is a hilarious, high energy show that combines the exciting performance and fun comedy that Shangela is known for. It’s a nonstop 90-minute ride on a rollercoaster with no safety belt... definitely going to be a night to remember!
This will be your debut show in Singapore. On a scale of 1-10, are you nervous about performing in front of a Singapore audience/fans?
A big zero! I’m not nervous at all. I’m Excited! Entertaining audiences is what I love to do. And I’ve wanted to visit Singapore for a while, and now I’m ready to deliver.
What inspires Shangela?
I am most inspired by my fans. Their energy and support since I first came into Drag Race On Season 2 is what continues to push me forward. I hope to always make them proud.
You were in Seasons 2 and 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as All-Stars 3, tell us a bit about the experience. Will we be seeing another comeback?
During the actual competition, it was very stressful. For seasons 2 and 3, I was the first person RuPaul ever brought back into a separate season to compete again. I didn’t want to let him down and I was very new to drag, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to do well. For All-Stars 3, it was a completely different experience. I felt more confident in myself because I had worked hard over the last seven years to become the Queen I always envisioned I could be. Looking back at this most recent season, I am so proud of what I was able to accomplish and I hope I’ve inspired my fans to work hard and never give up on their dreams. And hey, I’m Shangela! I always come back... so beware all boxes!
We love all your Snatch Game impersonations on RuPaul’s Drag Race! But if you could be anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
I would be Oprah! Who doesn’t love Oprah?!? She seems to be so wise, and always focused on improving herself physically and spiritually. She also is in a position to help so many people around the world. I’d love to be able to have that impact on such a grand and global scale.
What’s next for Shangela?
A nap – just kidding! I really do feel like that there is no limit to what I can accomplish. At the end of this year I will have performed in 181 cities around the world, written and produced music, voiced an animated drag character for Netflix, and worked as an actor in a number of projects including the coolest of them all, the movie A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. In this next chapter of my life, I want to put an even greater focus on working in television and film. It has always been my dream and I’m not afraid of working hard to make even more of my dreams come true.
