One of the first Singaporean singers to successfully break into the international market, Kit Chan stormed onto the Mando-pop scene in Taiwan with her 1994 debut album, Heartache. From there, her career soared to greater heights, including acting roles in drama series, awards local and abroad, and of course, that one hit song, ‘Home’. Since we haven’t heard much from her in recent years (apart from that I Am A Singer debacle), it’s safe to say we’re pretty stoked to welcome her back on stage. Lim Sze Yuan finds out five things about Kit Chan.

"I do get sick of singing some of my own songs, but not 'Home'. It's a song that belongs to everyone."

1. She believes one should always be patriotic: 'Spellbound isn't an SG50 concert. As Singaporeans, we should be loving Singapore all the time – we don't need to be so deliberate.'

2. She seeks inspiration in the little things: 'I used to only be inspired when I was travelling, but now I try to be inspired every day. Even at home, when I look out the window, I appreciate the different colours of the sky in the evenings – how it can be bluish on certain days and golden on others.'

3. She named her concert ‘Spellbound’ to describe how she feels on stage: 'I thought about what I look forward to when I'm on stage performing, and I realised it was the state of being spellbound. You're not so conscious of yourself or your surroundings, and you're immersed in the atmosphere and the whole musical experience. Essentially, you're immersed in the world of the performer. This year's concert is different from 2011's concert because I'm just following my desires and my personal rhythm and I feel it’s more organic this way. I hope the concertgoers will immerse themselves in the experience.’

4. She goes for minimalism over extravagance: 'Adopting a simpler, purer approach helps me bring out the true essence of the music. Other singers may wish to have spectacular elements like fireworks at their concerts, but personally, it's all very distracting. I hope to just focus on the music.'

5. She doesn't tire of performing her iconic track, 'Home':  'I do get sick of singing some of my own songs, but not 'Home'. It's a song that belongs to everyone. I'm not greedy, I think having one is enough, so I'll let someone else create another like it. Sometimes ministers tell me, “Kit, can you create another 'Home'?” Why would you want another? 'Home' is 'Home' – if you want another song, go write another song.'
