If you like your classical music with a little bit of everything, this one’s for you. Over two evenings at Esplanade Concert Hall on September 18 and 19, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra brings together conductor Vasily Petrenko, cellist Gautier Capuçon and the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir for a varied programme featuring works by Arvo Pärt, Saint-Saëns and Shostakovich – moving from joyful choral music to a virtuosic concerto and full-scale symphonic drama.
The evening opens with Arvo Pärt’s Our Garden, a bright, playful cantata written for children’s choir and orchestra. The Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir takes centre stage here, bringing the work’s sense of wonder to life alongside the orchestra.
Next up is Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1, one of the composer’s best-loved works, performed by acclaimed French cellist Gautier Capuçon. Expect soaring melodies, nimble playing and plenty of moments that remind you why the cello is such a show-stealer.
The concert then takes a darker, more dramatic turn with Shostakovich’s Fourth Symphony, a sprawling and powerful work that brings the evening to a suitably epic close.
