Welcome to Da Bao Diaries, a daily column dedicated to what Time Out Singapore's editors are eating and drinking while Singapore's 'circuit breaker' measures are in place till June 1. Da bao is a Singaporean colloquialism derived from Mandarin that refers to having a meal to go instead of dining in at an establishment.
There isn't much of a nightlife scene to speak of right now but Zoom parties and virtual music festivals might help fill the void. And if its the pre-game food you’re missing, Zouk’s very own RedTail Bar is now offering deliveries – and the best part is that some dishes are priced from just $5.90.
Those acquainted with the club will recognise the iconic sausage and mash ($10). It's a fan-favourite dish that requires little introduction – fluffy garlic mash bathed in mushroom gravy and a side of pork sausage. Order it for nostalgia, not so much the taste since it doesn’t travel well. It’s lukewarm by the time it gets to you, and its semi-liquid state makes it troublesome to transfer onto another dish to re-heat in the microwave. Then there’s the classic sour plum shooters ($70 a bottle), a familiar and refreshing concoction to imbibe with your friends as you hit up one of Zouk’s virtual parties.
You don’t need to be a night owl to enjoy RedTail’s offerings. Its lunch special, which runs from 11am to 4pm daily, features dishes that go for just $5.90. We like the Royal Broth Congee, a soothing bowl of porridge with a ginger-scented broth packed with bits of scallops, prawns, and roast duck. There’s also the chilli pan mee-inspired udon dish, where noodles come tossed with zingy lao gan ma chilli sauce, minced pork, and mushrooms, topped with peanuts and ikan bilis for crunch.
The affordable lunch menu also features classic dishes of sliced fish noodles, curry chicken with rice, dory fish and chips, and Caesar chicken wrap.
