For three high-octane nights each year, the city lends its streets for the most dramatic race in the Formula 1 calendar. Usually held in September, it's the only time of the year where you get to see the world's best F1 drivers and biggest music acts come to town to put one helluva show, set against the stunning Marina Bay skyline. Hate to be a bearer of bad news, but that time won't come around this year – cue the screeching tires.

Race promoter Singapore GP Pte Ltd has recently announced the cancellation of this year's F1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix due to ongoing safety and logistic concerns brought about by Covid-19. This is the second time the event has been axed, followed by last year's.

Even with three months to go till the popular night race, there is a lot of construction and planning to be done. Things like constructing the circuit and stands for the audience – which usually starts in May – cannot go on because of the legal restrictions for live events. And being in Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) doesn't help either. On top of that, worldwide travel restrictions prove to be another factor in making the decision. Taking the responsible route, the authorities and parties involved have decided to prioritise safety.

“We understand that our fans were looking forward to another edition of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. To cancel the event for a second year is an incredibly difficult decision, but a necessary one in light of the prevailing restrictions for live events in Singapore,” said Mr. Colin Syn, Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd. “We would not be able to deliver a full event experience fans have come to expect over the years, while safeguarding the health and safety of our fans, contractors, volunteers and staff. Ultimately, we have to be responsible, cautious and prudent as safety is our number one concern.”

Since 2008, the F1 Singapore Grand Prix has been Singapore's things to do calendar pinnacle. The night race has attracted people from all corners of the country and around the world to cheer on their favourite F1 drivers and celebrate under the stars. And famous motor racers including Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel aren't the only ones making loud noises. Over the last few years, the event has boasted an ace lineup of international acts – Calvin Harris, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Queen, Muse, The Killers, just to name a few. There were also ultra-luxe after-parties where you get to rub shoulders with A-listers.

Tickets for this year’s F1 Singapore Grand Prix have not been released for sale, but ticket holders who deferred their 2020 tickets to the 2021 race will be fully refunded. Singapore GP will be contacting them directly with the details. For more information, visit singaporegp.sg.
