Here’s what’s new, what’s changed, and why it might be your next city stay

There’s something quietly nostalgic about walking past the Peninsula Shopping Centre. It’s a corner of Singapore that whispers stories of a bygone era, and right next door stood the iconic Peninsula Excelsior Singapore Hotel, a fixture on the skyline for over five decades. From its beginnings as Peninsula Hotel in 1974 to the merger with Excelsior Hotel in 2000, it was the go-to spot for discerning travellers and business leaders alike.
These days, the familiar façade now heralds a new name and a fresh chapter: Wyndham Singapore Hotel. A $50 million transformation later, this historic landmark has been reborn, marrying its storied past with Wyndham Hotels and Resorts’ global hospitality standards. Of course, I had to drop by to see what’s changed.
The transformation isn’t just cosmetic. Wyndham Singapore now sits proudly in the upper-upscale bracket, offering modern elegance without losing the charm that made its predecessor a city favourite.
Stepping into the rooms, the contrast is immediately striking. Where Peninsula Excelsior felt familiar and classic, Wyndham Singapore’s interiors are sleek, modern, and thoughtfully curated. Plush bedding, subtle lighting, and a neutral palette make each room a haven of comfort. I absolutely love the orange leather suitcase-inspired details.
Then there are the views: whether gazing over Marina Bay or Fort Canning Hill, the city’s skyline unfolds like a living postcard. Executive Bay View rooms, in particular, offer panoramic vistas that make morning coffee or an evening wind-down feel a little extra special.
Breakfast at Wyndham is a tale of two experiences. Jaspé, the main buffet restaurant, leans into variety with a mix of French and Asian-inspired dishes – a solid choice for hearty appetites.
Meanwhile, the smaller, lighter breakfast set-up at the Sky Lounge offers cereals, cold cuts, and bites, but it’s the vantage point that steals the show. Perched high above the city, the sweeping views of Marina Bay Sands and Clarke Quay make even a simple plate of toast feel cinematic.
For evening unwinding, Bentley’s lobby bar crafts cocktails with sophistication. The space hasn’t changed drastically from its former life either – the familiar ceiling remains, lending a touch of nostalgia to the refreshed surroundings. What I love most, though, is the natural light that pours in by day, making even a mid-afternoon tipple feel entirely justified. And with those floor-to-ceiling windows, you’ll also catch sight of the outdoor glass-walled pool glimmering just outside. A little birdy told us that there are plans to feature a mermaid show.
Wyndham Singapore doesn’t skimp on leisure. Two inviting swimming pools provide plenty of space for a dip, while the 24-hour gym packs in the essentials – though peak mornings can feel cramped. Event spaces and executive lounges add a touch of exclusivity, ensuring both business and leisure travellers are well catered for.
Location is everything and Wyndham Singapore nails it. Steps from Funan’s shopping and dining mecca, a short stroll to the National Gallery Singapore, and mere minutes from Capitol Theatre, it’s the perfect base to play tourist or simply enjoy a city escape. City Hall MRT is also a stone’s throw away if you’re looking to explore elsewhere.
If nostalgia calls, head into a Peninsula Shopping Centre for a quick bargain or wander past Peninsula Shopping Centre, reminding you of the hotel’s heritage – a subtle nod to what once was, now elevated for today.
Whether you’re after plush rooms with sweeping city views or a strategic city-centre base, Wyndham Singapore ticks the boxes. And hey, if the hotel restaurants don’t quite cut it, you have a variety of other options just by your doorstep. Find out more about Wyndham Singapore Hotel here.
