In a move that no bubble tea fan saw coming, Gong Cha made a complete exit from Singapore in October, with all outlets of the popular beverage chain suddenly shuttering at the same time. But in its place now comes a brand new drink chain, Cai Ca (采茶) – which translates to “picking tea”, as in the act of plucking leaves from a tea plantation.
Cai Ca prides itself on being Singapore’s first F&B brand to brew tea with soy bean milk, and one example of this is its toffee chewy pearl soy milk tea – perfect for those who are lactose intolerant or staying away from dairy for health reasons.
That doesn’t mean classic milk teas are off the menu though. Bubble tea traditionalists can try the classic chewy pearl milk tea ($4.60) or the choco intense with chewy pearl ($5.80), while those who prefer fruity and floral flavours can go for brews like green or purple grape imperial jasmine ($5.20), peach fruit tea, and golden osmanthus tea.
Not all of Gong Cha’s previous outlets have made the transformation into Cai Ca. At present, six of them are in this new era, but that’s nonetheless a pretty strong start for a new brand. Find Cai Ca’s branches at Bugis Junction, Century Square, King Albert Park, Lot One, Northpoint City, and NUS UTown. While most of them are kiosks, the one at Lot One, which is right next to Choa Chu Kang Public Library, has a bar counter as well as a table with seats.
