Here's where to see the rare 'super blood blue moon' in Singapore

Wait, what is a ‘super blue blood moon’?

It’s a unique phenomenon that sees three overlapping lunar events: a blue moon (when there are two full moons in one month), a super moon (when the moon appears larger than normal because it’s closest to the Earth) and a blood moon (when the moon appears red because Earth’s shadow is cast on it, also known as a total lunar eclipse).

Sounds cool. Err, but why is this special?

Because the last time the planets aligned this way was in 1866, almost 152 years ago!

Will my eyes hurt if I look at the moon directly then?

Unlike a solar eclipse, you can view this lunar eclipse safely without any protective eyewear.

Ok, I’m sold. Where is the best place to see this?

Well, for one, you can just look out of your window on the night of January 31. If you want to gather with fellow skywatchers to marvel at this extraordinary occurrence, head to the Science Centre Singapore – telescopes will be set up for viewing on a first come, first served basis. We hear they’re also planning free planetarium live shows about the moon.

Once in a Blue Moon is happening at Science Centre Singapore on Jan 31, 7.30pm-10.30pm. Admission is free.
