In a bit of good news for the many cycling enthusiasts out there, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that it will be launching a new cycling lane along West Camp Road that will allow cyclists more breathing room on the road.

On most roads in Singapore, cycling groups must not exceed the maximum length of five bicycles. That means that there must be no more than five cyclists riding single file, or 10 cyclists riding two abreast.

That's about to change on West Camp Road. According to Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng’s Facebook post, this new cycling lane will allow riders to cycle in groups larger than 10.

In operation every Sunday morning from 5am to 11am, it will also be strictly reserved for buses and cyclists during this time. What that means? No more jostling with pedestrians, motorists and PMDs.

LTA will begin the six-month trial of the cycling lane on October 16. Running over 2km long, the cycling lane will be demarcated by solid blue lines and run in both directions of the road.

Mr Baey stated that the new cycling lane is meant to provide cyclists with more ‘safety and security’ on the road. “Hopefully, this will help newer on-road cyclists gain confidence and allow room for practising to cycle to the far left of the road when cycling elsewhere,” he added.

However, he also emphasised that cyclists should opt to use cycling paths if they are more accessible.

West Camp Road, which runs parallel to the Seletar Airport runway, was selected to go on trial for on-road cycling lane due to its popularity among cyclists. According to LTA, vehicular traffic is low from 5am to 11am, with 85 percent of road users being cyclists. Otherwise, there is only one such cycling lane in Singapore, located along Tanah Merah Coast Road in Changi East.
