Something new is brewing along East Coast Road. Starbucks has recently set up shop at Katong Square within a conservation building. Built in 1928, the site was once home to the former Joo Chiat Police Station – and according to the Urban Redevelopment Authority, was used to lock up triad gang members.

Its dreary history has since made way for a brighter tale – one filled with aromatic brews and warm bakes. Starbucks' latest outlet now occupies the first floor of this conserved space at Katong Square. Inside, the sun-strewn interior comes fitted with natural wooden accents, plenty of seating, and various artworks by local artist Danielle Tay. She drew inspiration from the neighbourhood’s rich Peranakan heritage to create a series of bright, bold paintings and murals that are reflective of the colourful culture.

Scroll down for a sneak peek of the space, which is located at #01-02 Katong Square, 86 East Coast Road.
