Tanglin is getting a new 1,000-seat theatre by 2030

Tanglin is getting a cultural glow up – a new 1,000-seat performing arts theatre is set to open by 2030, rising from the redevelopment of the former Tanglin Shopping Centre at 19 Tanglin Road. This is also part of URA’s wider plans to revive the entire stretch into an arts-and-artisanal mixed-use precinct. 

The purpose-built proscenium theatre designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma will sit within a much larger mixed-use development, which will also house shops, offices, wellness facilities, cultural spaces and a contemporary art museum. 

The theatre is being funded and developed by Singapore-based Pacific Eagle Real Estate, with backing from the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the National Arts Council. And at 1,000 seats, it lands neatly between the city’s smaller and mega-sized venues: Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall seat around 600 while the Esplanade’s Theatre and Concert Hall each accommodate more than 1,600.

So, what’s it for? Expect bigger plays, musicals, dance performances and concerts, with both local and international productions expected to take the stage. And of course, the new venue will open up jobs and opportunities for Singapore’s arts professionals, from technical theatre to arts management, while giving audiences another place to catch major productions.

This new theatre is the first cultural project to be supported under the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Strategic Development Incentive scheme, which aims to breathe new life into older buildings.
