Singapore’s long-time hip hop DJs and nightlife promoters, Ollie’des and Ya5th, are coming together to start a new RnB and hip hop night like no other. Called Honey, get your groove on for their first night on Friday 11 August held at Club iKi at The Riverwalk.
Speaking to Ya5th over chat, he tells us they feel there is a void in RnB music and its vibe at parties. We agree! “There’s so many sub-genres nowadays that for us DJs or musicians, what do we categorise this as? We want to bring something that is not only RnB but also with a hip hop feel or beat to it. The electronica part of Honey is to draw on a wide variety of music styles with influences from disco and soul. Think Kaytranada, Jorja Smith, Goldlink and Jarreau Vandal. We will also not leave out faves from the yesteryears that have influenced our styles now,” explains Ya5th.
Both these DJs have been influential in educating Singapore crowds with the latest and coolest sounds in hip hop, RnB, funk, soul, Afro and Latin beats over the years through their various party nights and as guest DJs in other collectives’ parties, as well as playing overseas.
