What’s on

Eureka Day by Singapore Repertory Theatre

Everyone’s entitled to an opinion. But at Eureka Day Elementary School, that’s where the trouble starts. American playwright Jonathan Spector’s riotously funny contemporary comedy turns a school committee’s debate over vaccine policy into a sharp, squirmingly hilarious lesson in what happens when five very reasonable people try very hard to agree. Making its Singapore premiere at KC Arts Centre from November 18, Singapore Repertory Theatre’s (SRT) production of the Broadway and West End hit, Eureka Day, begins when a health scare puts the school’s vaccine policy under scrutiny. What follows is a masterclass in the fine art of disagreeing agreeably, as five committee members attempt to navigate a deeply divisive issue without stepping on anyone’s toes. Until an online meeting and its increasingly unfiltered comment section prove that there’s a reason “don’t read the comments” became internet wisdom. Directed by SRT’s Daniel Jenkins, this Singapore production stars Benjamin Chow, Julie Wee, Munah Bagharib, Coco Wang and Shane Mardjuki. Expect big personalities, razor-sharp observations and plenty of those deliciously uncomfortable moments as the committee learns that there’s more than one school of thought – and that getting everyone on the same page is easier said than done. If you’ve ever watched a WhatsApp debate go several messages beyond the point of no return, you’ll find plenty to laugh and wince at here. Tickets are from $48 and eligible for the SG Culture Pass....
