Stacks of crates with displays of mock produce and a rustic, all-wood interior overhung with dangling light bulbs greet you upon entry – creating an interior reminiscent of quaint Japanese eateries. Aoba’s menu offers an array of ramen in flavours of shio (salt), miso and shoyu (soya sauce), all basking in a broth perfumed with pork and chicken bones; our top pick goes to shoyu tontoro ramen served with slices of roasted pork cheek and a komi tamago (boiled soya flavoured egg). Although Aoba doesn’t offer desserts, there are Western and Japanese starters worth checking out, including the baconstreaked Caesar salad and grilled shishamo (boneless fish).
