The excitement over this Japanese chain’s ‘organic’, hormone-free, Hokkaido-raised beef and potatoes is mostly what it is – hype. While we’re more than pleased to have relatively healthier ingredients and happy for the curb on salt, the wedges are too bland and the Freshness burger still holds within it a patty of questionable texture and colour.
The Freshness Burger ($4.50) is a soft, yellow bun that holds almost half a tomato, generous amounts of mayonnaise and sautéed onions in a sweet and sour sauce, and a grey patty which is merely half the thickness of the tomato slice. The end-product – doused with condiments (the wedges were just asking to be coated with sweet chilli sauce) – undoes the organic niceties that was promised. Try, however, the popover ($3.30) – a warm buttery puff that comes with sweet cream cheese on the side. And if you intend to go all out, they’ve got a Spam Burger, with an egg on top.
