In-house noodle chef The signage is in Mandarin only, so match these out stroke-for-stroke: 金芙蓉食府. We’ll offer more hints – it’s two doors down from the Golden Duck Restaurant (369 Balestier Rd; 6255 8135), above which a golden (now dusty brown) duck hangs. Food-wise, Jin Fu Rong Shi Fu could not be any more different from its speciality roast duck neighbour: on Jin’s menu is a selection of over 80 dishes (dessert included), from dumplings and buns (get a basket of the soft-doughed savoury-sauced Tian Jin gou bu li buns, $3.50 for three) to stir-fries and hand-pulled noodles, the latter made fresh by the Chinese chef in the glass area in the back. Watch him stretch, blanch and plate uneven but springy strings of dough in just a couple of deft strokes while you pick on crisp pig ears ($8).
Main courses $4-$16.
