Not that it was in need of reinvention, but the concept of conveyor-belt sushi has recently been re-imagined by Kichi Kichi. The result? A brightly lit, all-you-can-eat restaurant encompassing counter seats set with individually served hotpots, and booths with communal hotpots, both arranged around a conveyor belt that incessantly pumps out plates of fresh seafood (mussels, prawns, squid, fish fillet), thinly sliced marbled beef, pork and vegetables.
Here’s the deal: for a fixed price, you get as much as you want from the belt and a choice of six types of soup base (prawn, chicken, mushroom, tom yam, herbal or Sichuan). We tried the mushroom and chicken broth and found both mightily salty and mediocre. You also get to pick two dishes (including flower crab and pork liver) from a list of 15 ‘favourites’, delivered to you from the kitchen.
Everything else will cost you, including the bottled water, as ice water, incredibly, is ‘not served yet’ – so be careful not to get drunk on the MSG-loaded hotpot soup. EC
