In sharp contrast to the Melbourne-inspired, laidback vibe of its sister café, The Plain, Jalan Besar’s new hangout is so-hip-it-hurts – no sign, no visible doors and a deliberate ramshackle chic interior with low-slung plastic crates, carelessly strewn fairy lights and plywood boards masquerading as tables. That said, there’s a couple of interesting savouries to be had – the wholesome beef steak ciabatta ($13.50), with juicy slivers of beef rump perked up with a zingy onion jam and tomato salsa, goes well with a cup of their wondrously smooth Genovese coffees ($3.80-$5.10).
