The Canteen

The Les Amis group’s recent offshoot may not look like much – but it sets precisely the kind of non-threatening mood that draws in the mums and dads. This is jazzed-up local street food with some low-key Japanese/fusion accents (laksa udon, anyone?). The menu is small, and the food is well executed, served quickly and reasonably priced. The Japanese burger (a side bowl of rice instead of a bun) charms with its nutmeggy patty and sunny-side-up egg, while the XO loh shu fun is a generous mound of springy noodles and minced pork. Also good for a mid-afternoon snack is the icy, refreshing lychee jelly dowsed with coconut milk.
