Simmering away in a quiet corner of Dempsey, this tandoor restaurant’s atmosphere is as warm as the aromatic curries brewing in the kitchen. Specialising in North Indian favourites like lamb rogan josh (slow-cooked meat served with Kashmiri spices) and chicken korma (a yoghurt and nut gravy), it also offers a varied wine list and a number of fine ales to douse the heat.
The sizzling tandoor platter is a hearty starter, with selections of red-dusted tikka and tender spiced kebabs. Another excellent entrée is the vegetable shashlik, mushrooms, broccoli and peppers stuffed with cottage cheese and yoghurt. The vindaloo curry is rich and creamy, albeit not as spicy as requested, and the grilled zafrani salmon – flourished with coriander, mint and saffron-infused yoghurt – is a modern alternative for the health conscious.
End the Indian affair by retiring to the Scotch Corner for a tipple or two. With its relaxed atmosphere and personable service, the aroma of The Clay Oven will linger well after you’ve headed home. MC
