It took two years but BetelBox – the same hostel that leads the Joo Chiat and Katong food walk – is now also a café on its ground floor. Serving colonial-inspired and Asian dishes like shepherd’s pie ($9.90), kung bak pao (pork belly bun, $9.90) and weekend roasts, this addition is part of owner Tony Tan’s – not the President – longstanding contribution to preserving the traditions of Singapore. Of course, a lot of thought has been put into the decor: apart from books and movies, the work of homegrown artists also makes up the eating house’s talking points.
