Tanjong Pagar has long been known for having many Korean eateries, and if that’s not enough, it’s adding one more to the list. The latest addition to this ever-growing community is Meatchelin, a Korean barbeque restaurant that separates itself from the rest by offering lamb on its menu. Although most people tend to stay away from lamb due to its tendency to taste gamey, Meatchelin has its staff expertly prepare and cook the meat for you to eliminate any undesirable flavours.
Those unsure of what to choose from Meatchelin’s extensive menu should definitely go for the six-piece signature lamb set ($138), which not only features free-range lamb from Australia, but also offers bean sprouts, okra, garlic, and tomatoes. The lamb is cooked on a charcoal grill by a chef, and the tender and juicy meat is paired with a garlic sauce recipe that has been passed down for three generations.
Besides lamb, do try the marinated prime short ribs ($58), black pork belly ($28), and Iberico pork collar ($28). If you prefer seafood, Meatchelin also offers scallops ($12), oysters ($12), and jumbo red shrimp ($15). All this will be prepared and cooked by the chef, so you don’t have to worry about undercooking or overcooking the meat.
While the focus is typically on the meat in a Korean barbeque restaurant, do not miss out on Meatchelin’s kimchi. Its kimchi is made from scratch and coated in a housemade marinade. Sometimes kimchi can be a little bit soggy, but Meatchelin’s kimchi is crunchy with a sweet and spicy kick as it is made fresh in front of customers. Those who aren’t good with spice can opt for the white kimchi, which has a mild and clean flavour.
Do note that reservations are required when dining at Meatchelin, as the restaurant can only hold up to 20 people at a time for each of its dining sessions. Make a booking here.
