Madam Zainab’s kueh bahulu ($16) follows a well-guarded recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation ­– the result is a light and fluffy cake that’s not too sweet or dry. While you can’t go wrong with the original version, there’s also a host of other flavours like raisin, cheese, pandan and chocolate chip bahulu on offer.

We’ll admit that we were first drawn to this because of how pretty it looks, making it a welcomed addition to any CNY table. Another family favourite at the CNY snack bar are melt-in-your-mouth morsels of kueh bangkit ($20) and Little Nonya's Cookies does some of the best in town. These dangerously addictive cookies have a rich pandan coconut flavour that is impossible to resist. We challenge you to try stopping at one.

Spice up your celebrations with Indonesian goodies and kueh lapis ($68) from Rasa Sayang. The layered cakes are available in a variety of flavours including coffee, pandan, prunes, cranberries and pineapple for that extra touch of golden luck you need to usher in prosperity this Chinese New Year.
