Tanuki Raw's flagship outlet at Orchard Central is two floors up from its previous location. Get the signature rice bowls – like the truffle yakiniku donburi ($18), and black garlic and roasted leek negitoro ($18) – or try new additions including the salted duck egg char siew donburi ($16). From 5 to 8pm every day, enjoy fresh oysters at $2 a shell when you order a $10 martini or cocktail, and $7 for salmon sashimi. And if you want to stay for dinner, try Tanuki's kaisen chirashi ($24.90) and a donut with pan-seared foie gras and sautéed mushrooms, drizzled in okonomiyaki sauce ($18.90).
Inspired by classic American bars but named after a shape-shifting, fox-like creature in Japanese mythology, Tanuki combines East and West into a tapas bar. Seattle-born owner Howard Lo (he’s also behind Standing Sushi Bar, Shinkansen and The Secret Mermaid) wants to banish the notion that tapas is high-end dining, with Tanuki’s hip and playful vibe complemented by an equal emphasis on the food and drinks – you’re not likely to eat without a cocktail in hand.
