Having made an arduous journey with his wife to Singapore from China, Chiang Yick Ching’s reputation precedes him; his is the longest-standing shirt-making establishment (since 1935) in this city-state. His trademark fused collars on Japanese and European soft-cotton shirts, embellished with functional pockets and monogrammed initials, have graced state leaders throughout Asia. The shirts are still reasonably priced, starting at US$80 (approximately S$108), and are now available in a myriad of colours: baby blue, sunny yellow and fuchsia for both men and women. Budding bespoke tailors can go online to the shop’s website to design their own shirt – just click on the ‘Create Your Shirt’ link – and even submit an online request for preferred fabric swatches to be sent over in two working days. Delivery is free (within Singapore) if you order four shirts or more.
